Abborravan

Rare plants can be found in the shallow water in Abborravan.

The very rare water soldiers grow in large quantities in the shallows. This is unusual so far north. The plants are at their most abundant in August, with around 2.5 million individuals. At this time, they cover most of the bottom of the lagoon. Two other rare aquatic plants in the reserve are the water knotweed and the whorled water-milfoil.

Old barns

East of the shallows is an old hay meadow, which was used up until the mid-1950s. In recent times, the land has been grazed by sheep and cows. The barns are relics of the hay-making age.
