Description

Köping Church was built after the previous church on the site, Jämmertuna Church, burned down in the 15th century.

History of the Church

The first church on the ridge belonged to the parish and was called Jämmertuna Church. It was badly damaged by fire in 1437. Since the town church was now dilapidated and was to be demolished, a church spacious enough for both the town and the parish was built. The plan was almost square with a central nave and two side naves. A bell tower was erected to the east of the church, probably at the beginning of the 16th century. In 1626 (the year is inscribed on the outside of the tower wall) a narrow, pointed spire was erected, which 18 years later was provided with a cross.

The church's architect is Tessin d.y.

The next renovation and extension was undertaken at the end of the 17th century. In 1687, a drawing of the church with the planned extension was made. Charles XI hired the prominent architect Nicodemus Tessin the Younger, and his work became the current church. The inauguration took place in 1706.

Next to the church there is a tin box with pilgrim passports and pilgrim stamps for those walking the St Olav Rombo Way pilgrimage trail.
