Sagobygden – a landscape of stories
Sagobygden in Ljungby is a storytelling landscape where real places – forests, lakes, hills and crossroads – carry old legends and stories. Here, nature and storytelling are closely connected, and the stories are tied to the places themselves.
Sagobygden stretches across Ljungby, Alvesta and Älmhult, but for many the experience begins in Ljungby. The Museum of Legends (Sagomuseet) is a natural starting point where you get an introduction to the stories, traditions and landscapes they belong to.
From there, the landscape takes over. The stories in Sagobygden are always connected to real places – a stone, a spring, a forest edge or a road. They are based on how people have experienced and understood their surroundings over generations. The stories can be about encounters, unusual events or people’s lives, but you don’t need any prior knowledge to take part in them. The experience happens at the place itself.
In the Ljungby area, many legend sites are located in scenic environments, often close to lakes, forests and viewpoints. A simple way to begin is to choose a few places that are close to each other. Follow the road or path, stop at the site and take in the story where it belongs. At several locations, small legend cabinets or signs share the story on site.
The sites can also be combined with walking routes or cycling tours, connecting several places into one continuous experience in the landscape.
Sagobygden is a way of being in nature where the stories add another dimension. You don’t just move through forests and along roads – you move through places that people have returned to, pointed out and talked about for generations.
The work behind Sagobygden is internationally recognised. Through Land of Legends Sweden, the area is included in UNESCO’s Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for intangible cultural heritage. It is both a place to visit and a living cultural landscape.
Many travellers pass through Ljungby without realising what is here. For those who stop and explore, it becomes a landscape where nature and stories are closely connected.
